The journal Nature Medicine recently published the results of a study in which doctors managed to cure a patient suffering from a progressive form of breast cancer at the terminal stage. For this purpose, the experimental immunotherapy method was used, as a result of which the tumors disappeared within a few weeks, and the patient is already in complete remission for almost 2 years.

This method of treatment is an improved form of so-called adaptive immunotherapy. Its essence lies in the fact that in the beginning the human immune cells are assembled, after which molecules introducing cancer are introduced into them. At the final stage, these “armed” cells are injected into the oncological organism, where they enter and destroy tumors.

At an early stage of research, there were some problems: the technique was effective only in certain forms of cancer, in particular, with epithelial cancer. They usually lead to minor mutations, which is of fundamental importance for the programming of immune cells that destroy malignant tumors.

Despite encouraging results, the studies are at an early stage and can continue until 2023, so it's too early to talk about a broad clinical application – it can take decades.

Last year, adaptive immunotherapy was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Unfortunately, this method of treatment will not be available to everyone. Thus, several young patients suffering from blood cancer, treatment cost almost half a million dollars.
