A group of students from the ETH Technical University from Zurich, under the guidance of a doctoral student, Julian Verkhov, developed the PeakBoil field oven. It consists of two parts: the combustion chamber, which includes a system of gas burners Venturi, which are “dressed” a special protective bulb, made on a 3D printer, also performing the function of a chimney. The flask reliably protects the flame from the wind. To maintain the flame inside the combustion chamber, localized pressure drops are used.
The second component is a water tank with a volume from the kettle, which in turn is mechanically rigidly connected to the combustion chamber. The undulating surface of the walls of the chamber increases the area of contact with water, which greatly accelerates the process of its heating.
This is also facilitated by the finest walls of the combustion chamber with a thickness of only 1/30 mm, manufactured on a special 3D printer made of metal powder by laser sintering.
PeakBoil has already passed a successful “break-in” during a ski trip on the Swiss Alps in conditions of strong winds.
