Active glasses-prosthesis will help to overcome senile problems with vision

One of the problems of gadget development by the elderly is the total incompatibility of small print and pictures on small screens with old age changes. In old age, the vision organs lose the ability to accurately focus on the object, the muscles around the lens lose elasticity, and the eyes “do not move.” Corrective lenses do not solve the problem, but recently they created the “Autofocal” headset in Stanford, which will become a kind of eye prosthesis.

The principle of the autofocal eye-set is simple: the system tracks the eye focus and automatically adjusts the complex of lenses and filters that simulate the natural A vision of the object to which our attention is drawn. The eyes almost do not need to move, the sensors catch the change of the object of interest, and then the whole picture changes before the eyes entirely.

So they look like

Autofocal works like an analogue of a motorized prosthesis of the arm or leg. The device receives a signal from the nervous system for action, and itself, based on the analysis of the current situation, makes a series of micro-maneuvers to achieve the goal. For this, the headset is equipped with an impressive list of instruments: depth cameras, motion sensors, pupil trackers, microcontrollers, motion sensors, etc. True and it looks like a gadget from the cyber punk universe – massive and uncomfortable.

The prototype is a prototype – in details it will be shown only at the conference in August this year. The developers say that in all the experiments we got noticeably better results than with the use of passive corrective lenses. And making a prosthesis for the eyes compact, easy and cheap is just a matter of technique and time.
