Scientists from the University of Seville were delighted when the computer model completely coincided with the fact that they saw in the structure of cells of flies and zebrafish. This is a fundamentally new stable geometric structure, which was called a “scutoid”. And if the calculations are correct, there are countless numbers in the body of people.

Almost all cells in the body of higher beings have very different shapes. Neurons are like radiant stars, erythrocytes are floating disks in the blood, bones resemble irregular porous honeycombs. And what does the epithelium look like? The most common fabric serves simultaneously as a barrier and a connecting element between the other parts of the body. And it should have a very dense, load-resistant structure.

Seville scientists conducted computer simulations in search of the optimal shape for “brick cells” in such a wall of epithelium. And got it – scutoid. A three-dimensional polyhedron that has a flat base and a vertex, joined together by six facets on one side and only five with the opposite side. For this, the scutoid has a characteristic triangular protuberance, which makes its shape fundamentally different from the “crumpled” cylinder.

Scutoids are better than all the three-dimensional forms known to us, they are folded into dense structures. And what the computer showed on the monitor, the scientists then saw in microscopes when studying real animal tissues. They are very likely in the human body. This is just a double discovery – in the field of mathematics and biology! And, maybe, progress in other areas, for example, if we learn how to build the most durable walls from skutoid bricks.
