We bring to your attention the 178th issue of our weekly project “Android News”! Today we will tell you about the most interesting new items presented at IFA 2018, taking place in Berlin and other interesting news from the Android world. Below with the same news you can see in the traditional text format.
Wrist smartphone from ZTE
The Chinese brand Nubia, owned by ZTE Corporation, introduced its first wrist-type smartphone, Alpha. The device is made in the form factor of the clock and, having a bendable display, offers enough useful space for interaction with the operating system interface.
If we believe the press-renderings that the manufacturer shared, the display of Nubia Alpha will protrude beyond the frame, occupying several centimeters on each side of the bracelet. The time will tell how this will affect the usability, but most likely this is just a demonstration of technology, rather than something more.
The manufacturer did not disclose details about the hardware of the novelty, noting that its display is made in accordance with OLED technology, and thanks to the support of 4G and the front camera, the user can not only make the usual phone calls, but also hold video conferences with the participation of several interlocutors.
In addition, it is known that Nubia Alpha will be able to take a picture and in high quality, and the specially adjusted proximity sensor will adjust the brightness of the screen in such a way that it does not fade under the sun's rays. It seems that the latter function will be most useful, given the non-standard form factor of the device.
The questionable HTC novel
HTC at the IFA 2018 presented the smartphone U12 Life. The device is equipped with a 6-inch FHD-display, a Snapdragon 636 processor, a dual rear camera (16 + 5 megapixel) with support for 4K-video, 13-megapixel front with a face-up and LED flash.
U12 Life goes on sale in two colors: Moonlight Blue and Twilight Purple in October this year at a price of 390 dollars. Out of the box, the smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. The battery here is 3600 mAh. The RAM is 4 GB, and the built-in 64 GB. For comparison, Redmi Note 5 on Snapdragon 636 is estimated at $ 150-160.
U12 Life does not have rounded corners of the display, the frames at the top and bottom are quite large. The only thing that the device looks like outwardly is the back of the case, which looks quite interesting and fresh.
What the company asks for 390 is unclear. This is the most uninteresting and boring smartphone this year with the most ridiculous price tag on the market. While Xiaomi sells Poco F1 for $ 300 on Snapdragon 845, HTC releases frank nonsense with a beautiful back cover design. It's a shame to watch how the giant of the market once rolled into a frank marsh.
The new BlackBerry
BlackBerry announced KEY2 LE, because smartphones with hardware keyboards are still interesting to users, although they are not intended primarily for users Entertainment.
The BlackBerry KEY2 audience took it well, especially business users in the US, Canada, Germany and Central Europe. The disadvantage of the smartphone was its price, which was considered too high for the hardware of this device. And now, at the IFA 2018 in Berlin, BlackBerry KEY2 LE was announced – a somewhat “light” version of the original model that preserves the most remarkable features of KEY2, making it an excellent device aimed at business users, notes Ro (Ro) on the pages of the resource gsmarena.com, considering the new mobile device.
Unlike the original version with the Snapdragon 660 chipset, the novelty is based on the hardware platform Snapdragon 636, combined in it with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 32- or 64-gigabyte built-in storage Lemma. Supported by a smartphone and microSD memory cards.
The display is still 4.5-inch with the same resolution – 1080 x 1620 pixels and a 3: 2 aspect ratio. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, whose version is not specified.
The standard version of KEY2 is equipped with a dual camera with 12 megapixel sensors. In the LE main camera, the 13-megapixel sensor (f / 2.2) is combined with an additional 5 megapixel (f / 2.4), sensitive to depth. The aperture is indicated in parentheses. The camera allows you to shoot 4K-video at a speed of 30 frames per second. The resolution of the camera located on the front of the smartphone is 8 megapixels
Although the capacity of the KEY2 LE battery is only 3000 mAh, the company notes that it will operate without recharging for long enough – at least 22 hours. Moreover, the device will let the user know that it's time to charge it. And these smart notifications will be based on the charging patterns of the device that are specific to the user.
As expected, KEY2 LE works out of the box running Android 8.1. The smartphone software provides additional useful functions.
KEY2 and KEY2 LE differ in the assembly. In KEY2 LE there is no aluminum frame. Instead of it – plastic. However, the soft-touch rear panel with a texture coating is inherent in the novelty. The keyboard has remained practically the same – with a fingerprint reader built into the space bar.
It's interesting to note that the KEY2 version was the first BlackBerry device from 2014, which was offered not only in black. The company presents three color options – Slate, Champagne and Atomic. The novelty, at the time of its announcement, has become the lightest and thinnest model of the KEY line.
The date of appearance of a new smartphone on sale in the world market is unknown. Prices of versions with 32 GB (in parentheses – 64 GB) built-in storage – 399 (449) US dollars (in the United States), 399 (429) euros (in Europe), 349 (399) pounds sterling in the UK and 519 (579) Canadian dollars (in Canada).
Games on Google Play without downloading
Google has expanded the capabilities of the “Instant Applications” feature, allowing you to play games from Google Play without having to download them to your device. The innovation is already available for some titles, whose developers have bothered to create a demo version.
According to Google's rules, the demo version should offer an opportunity to evaluate the mechanics and gameplay before buying the game. Thus, the search giant expects to reduce the number of requests for reimbursement of funds from disgruntled users.
Implementing the ability to launch games directly on Google Play was possible thanks to the technology AppOnBoard. It requires that each demo version weighs no more than 10 MB, so that any user can appreciate the desired title regardless of the characteristics of his device.
The appearance in Google Play of game demos, in addition to positive experience, may negatively affect their price . Since the placement of “probes” is not a free service for developers, some of them may start to include current costs in the cost of the final product.
Since the demo versions have not yet received the proper distribution, and Google does not have a list of supporting their games, the only way to search is manual. For titles for which demonstration is available, the “Try Now” button or “Play” appears next to the setup key.
