The new development of an international team of scientists shows how high heights can be achieved by following this concept, who demonstrated how one garbage can be used to collect and dispose of another.

This is a polymer that will form the basis of a new sorbent for the collection of spilled oil products. The polymer consists of the following components: used cooking oil, sodium chloride and sulfur. The first is easy to find in the kitchen of any fast food, the second – the usual salt, and orphan sulfur in excess in hydrogen sulfide, which is considered a by-product in the extraction of the oil itself.

Since oil and sulfur are hydrophobic, a polysulfide polymer based on them effectively repels water molecules. And if you pass through such a material a mixture of water and the hydrocarbons in it, it will be divided into components – a kind of filtration will take place. It only remains to give the polymer the shape of a porous sponge that will absorb spillage, giving out relatively clean water.

An alternative way of using the sorbent is in the form of pellets that can be dispersed from the air, neutralizing large oil spills. The polymer does not yet have its own name, but on its basis a new class of sorbents can be created. Cheap, efficient, and helping to bring the issue of processing and recycling of waste from various industries to a qualitatively new level. It is exactly what the world needs.
