Researchers from the University of Washington put a GoPro camera on the head of the Alaskan malamute, and on the paws and tail – position sensors in space. In this outfit, the dog took part in recording 380 short clips demonstrating the animal's behavior in various situations. These data formed the basis of the training program for the new neural network DECADE.

50 different interiors were used for recording: a living room, an office, a park, a street, etc. The dog was given simple, the most common commands, she played, walked and interacted with several categories of people, other dogs and cars. In each lesson, the position of limbs in space, dynamics of movement, sounds and a visual picture were fixed so that the AI ​​could make connections between them.

The main task for the neural network at this stage: the answer to the question “what will the dog do in a particular situation”. For example, he will wave his tail at the replica “Good Boy”, but he will remain in place. And if you throw the ball – will run, but how exactly will it get around the obstacles? DECADE demonstrate the beginning of the scene and the neural network should simulate its continuation.

The ultimate goal of the project is to prepare a platform for the construction of robotic dogs, or machines that mimic other animals. Evolution has already taught them to find a safe route in the forest, effectively pursue prey or escape, protect themselves. And instead of inventing algorithms for robots from scratch, is not it easier to just adopt the basics of their behavior in real animals? In the next version, AI will be trained to work with smells and touch.
