I remember those days when manufacturers presented unusual smartphones. The peak came in 2013. HTC then released its most successful One M7, and Motorola showed Moto X. What was interesting about Moto X? It was the only flagship not on the top-end gland, but he offered an excellent design and the ability to customize the appearance of the smartphone. Moto X offered Active Display back in 2013.
In 2013, I also remember the BlackBerry with a successful BlackBerry Z10. The device I owned, and for his years he was extremely unusual, unlike anything else. And still continues to be so. In 2013, Nokia and Microsoft showed the public new smartphones on Windows Mobile. And the very first device on Windows Mobile – HTC Mozart – was also in my possession.
Frankly speaking, looking into the past, I understand how diverse and interesting the smartphone market was. The consumers themselves were not just consumers, but rather a kind of community of interests. I remember groups in the social network VKontakte, connected with smartphones, where constantly passed hot discussions on the topic of smartphones. People were interested in this.
Now, unfortunately, all this was lost. Disappeared some atmosphere gik-hangouts, which was present then. If then the market was studied by manufacturers not completely and smart phones really tried to surprise, now people probably got used to it. Yes, and manufacturers are a little tired every year to produce the same products. The audience, in my opinion, noticeably lost interest in smartphones in the current view – they are tired of them. And now I will prove this by a simple example.
Between 2013 and 2018, 5 years. Between 2008 and 2013, too, 5 years. But what companies showed in 2008 and in 2013? In 2008, most used button phones, like me. However, in 2013 the market was already Galaxy S4 with FHD AMOLED-display, there was a lot of interesting smartphones on the market.
If we compare 2013 and 2018, the difference will not seem so significant. Before users all the same rectangular screens with FHD-resolution. Therefore, I can say with certainty that this is a stagnation, which, in my opinion, in the next couple of years is compensated by the release of flexible smartphones. Flexibility will give the market a lot. Manufacturers will not confine themselves to the usual framework, they will have more room to think about the concept.
I believe that in the near future the smartphone market will move into a new dimension, where there will be other form factors, other design requirements and other tastes. Everything will be different. And this is clearly seen in the new cars of 2018 – all of them are futuristic, and against their background smartphones in the current view seem to be something ancient.
And, of course, I would add that smartphones have become part of a smart home and are associated with home appliances. In the near future, it will be not only about smartphones, as about the future, but also about all of the technology in general. We will live in a society where everything is interconnected, and smartphones will be only a small part of this system. And the fact that our gadgets will go away from the current form factor, I'm 100% sure. It's only a matter of time: it will happen in a year or two or in 5 years. Producers will delay until the last, as profit is above all. But to pull, in my opinion, there is no sense.
