With Spotlight you can find the necessary documents or files in a matter of seconds. But what if the file does not appear in the search results, although you know for sure that it is present on your Mac? In this case, you should re-index the drives.

A similar error could have occurred due to system updates, especially if the clean installation of macOS has not been performed for many years. Today we will look at two ways to solve this problem.

The first way

  • Run the “System Preferences.”
  • Select the “Spotlight” menu item.
  • Go to the “Privacy” tab.
  • Add all our hard disks to the list to prohibit indexing.
  • Confirm the operation.
  • After that, delete the added drives by clicking on “-“.
  • Now Spotlight will index the contents of the hard disks again. It can take from several minutes to several hours depending on the amount of data and the speed of the drive.

    The second way

  • Run the Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.
  • At the command prompt, enter the command:
    sudo mdutil -i on /
  • Enter the password to complete.
  • Immediately after this, the re-indexing process will begin.
