The Australian organization for scientific and industrial research of the Commonwealth countries has tested a new technology of fuel cells in which hydrogen is not stored, but produced as consumption. The main working substance here is ammonia, which is much safer than hydrogen in the fire plan and in addition contains twice as much energy as liquefied hydrogen. It is possible that it will be the fuel of the future.
The ammonia-hydrogen battery consists of a tank with ammonia, a special membrane and a controller. It is the design of the membrane that Australian engineers are most proud of – it allows you to extract pure hydrogen from ammonia by eliminating impurities. The necessary gas is burned in the combustion chamber of the machine, the surplus enters the atmosphere. This is basically ordinary nitrogen, so there is no harm to the environment.
And it's cheap, because the synthesis of ammonia from the same hydrogen and atmospheric nitrogen was invented a century ago and is used on an industrial scale around the world. The substance is easy to store and transport, fuel cells do not have to build complex complexes, plus it is a potentially renewable form of energy – all components are taken simply from the atmosphere of the planet and products of processing also enter there. The first cars with new power plants, Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, were successfully tested.
And now the same Toyota and Hyundai are racing to invest in this new industry, despite the fact that there are not very many hydrogen cars in Australia yet. There will not be too many of them in the next couple of years, but the factories for the preparation of ammonia fuel will be able to supply the giant Asian market.
