Not everything that moves progress looks worthy of an artist's brush. For example, the substance for the operation of solid rocket engines resembles a very viscous semolina porridge. And the process of mixing it can cause vomiting, but worse – detonation of its components. Therefore, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has developed a new and unusual way of obtaining the mixture.
The solid propellant for rocket engines includes a substance with a very large stored energy, an oxidant and various binding components. They should be carefully and evenly distributed throughout the entire volume of the finished product, otherwise it will not be possible to achieve stable engine performance. But in the process of physical impact of the mixer, the components already have a risk of detonation, and mixing of the substance needs a long time.
Japanese engineers borrowed the idea from the living intestine and created a robot that transports a mixture of substances through a set of flexible containers with valves. Moving is created by reducing the pressure in one container and raising it in another, in this process there are no impacts, no friction, and no risk of detonation. And since the working substance is distributed for the most part of the volume of the construction, a critically dangerous mass does not accumulate anywhere.
The minus of the robot is obvious – it's too slow. But in order to launch a rocket with a height of 17-storey house, a lot of solid fuel is needed, at a rate of 6 tons per second.
