Far from each of us is given the ability to learn at least one foreign language. But what if you need to go abroad, and the knowledge of the local language is not enough? Use the online translator, which in the vastness of the web is great. But they all have one drawback: they need a connection to the Internet. But Microsoft recently introduced a fairly high-quality offline translator that works on the basis of neural network algorithms and does not require an Internet connection.

Of course, someone will say that there are many offline programs for translation without constant online. Yes, but the quality of translation in them leaves much to be desired, and such a translation was popularly called “Promptovskiy” (in honor of one of the first translation programs that were popular in the early 2000s). Translation with the help of programs built on the algorithms of neural networks, is much more accurate. According to the developers from Microsoft themselves,

“Modified version of Microsoft Translator supports updated neural network language packs for the following languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Thai. The quality of the translation has increased by an average of 23% compared to other similar programs. “

It should be noted that the function of neural network translation was available from the autumn of 2017, but only on a small number of devices with a dedicated chip for neural computing, the requirement of constant online for work. Moreover, according to the statement of the same Microsoft, the function of the offline translator can be used by third-party developers whose programs are adapted to work with the Microsoft Translator API. Download the updated version in stores for iOS and Android will be in the very near future.

I would also like to mention that the well-known translator from Google works with neural network algorithms, but only when connecting to the Internet. Taught by the bitter experience of faith in the sweet speeches of PR departments of large companies, we could not but verify personally how well the vaunted translators on the basis of neural networks work. In our opinion, both developments are far from ideal and, although they manage better than the ever memorable PROMPTA, they can still make quite gross mistakes.
