A team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), led by Professor Gregory Rutledge, developed new polyethylene nanofibers. They are stronger in strength than Kevlar, which is used for the manufacture of bulletproof vests.

A method was used to produce the finest gel fibers, which are pressed through a heated syringe. After that, from the filaments obtained by means of an electric field, a finished fabric is formed.

These gel fibers have only a few hundred nanometers in thickness, but at the same time they have ultrahigh strength, the nature of which scientists have not yet been able to ascertain.

Compared with carbon and ceramic fibers, new nanofibers are much stronger, while they have a lower density. And let them not be sufficiently resistant to stretching, but they are very light and inexpensive in production.
