Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar – an unusual bottle for cosmic champagne

The company Maison mumm, the world-famous producer of sparkling wines, has challenged … earth gravity. Her last brainchild is a bottle called Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar, specially designed for champagne, which astronauts will take with them to space expeditions. Its presentation should take place in September 2018. It should be added that the Mumm Grand Cordon Stellar is the fruit of a three-year partnership with a young Spade company specializing in space development.

In recent years, the number of drinks on the crew menu of the ISS has increased significantly. Among them, espresso, beer and even cosmic whiskey. Next in line is champagne. Under terrestrial conditions, the behavior of a sparkling drink is simple and straightforward: under the influence of gravity, the wine flows through the neck of the inclined bottle into the glass. In space, in view of the lack of gravity, the surface tension of champagne changes and it, like an oily liquid, sticks to the walls of the bottle.

 Cosmic Champagne

Spade specialists do not disclose the technological details of their product. Outwardly, it differs little from its terrestrial “relatives”, except for an unusual ring holding a cork in the neck and a mechanism inside the bottle, which with the help of carbon dioxide completely turns champagne into foam. It is in the form of foam, but not liquid, it flows out, rather it floats out of the open bottle in a state of weightlessness.

The developers took care of the glasses. They are small glass cups with a diameter of about 5 cm on a pointed conical stem without a traditional support, since it is obviously not necessary to put it in weightlessness. The inner surface of the cup creates a surface tension that holds the foam ball until it is used.

A few words about the taste characteristics of cosmic champagne. Once in the mouth, the foam immediately turns into a liquid.

“It is amazing. “Explains master wine maker of Maison Mumm, Didier Mariotti.” Thanks to the weightlessness, the liquid immediately covers the entire oral cavity, enhancing the taste sensations from our unusual, unique drink. ”            js.src = “&version=v2.8”;    'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));
