The concept of a passive system for the collection of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean Ocean Cleanup originated five years ago and all this time there were discussions about the principles of its work. Now, at last, the final design is worked out. It will be tested in the fall and will begin work until the end of this year.
Originally, Ocean Cleanup was designed as a giant U-shaped network suspended on floats that are kept in stable condition by anchors. Then the anchors were replaced by floating cargo, which is lowered much below the sea level, about 600 m. This will allow the “scavenger” to drift more slowly than the garbage itself, but not be afraid of being torn by storms.
Simulation showed that with a certain combination of wind and currents, the trash that is thrown into the neck of the net will bounce off the floats and fly out of the trap. To solve the problem, the network in the center of the trap was lowered to a depth of more than 3 m, and at the ends it was raised to the surface itself. Garbage will be hammered into the center and brake it, so that the entire structure does not move faster than the flow, but the edges can freely rotate at high speed, according to the will of the waves and wind. From the outside it looks like the mouth of the game Pak-Men – what will bring inside, back will not come out.
As the scavenger's networks are filled up, the sensors signal the vessel-collector, which overloads the collected garbage and transports it for processing. The Ocean Cleanup system is good in that it works in a passive mode and can be modular – that is, have any size.
