At the World Architecture Festival 2018 (World Architecture Festival) in Amsterdam, the most outstanding design of the year was chosen. They became the residential building Kampung Admiralty in Singapore from WOHA, which rebuilt several old high-rise buildings into a new multi-level recreational zone. It is designed to meet the needs of older citizens in a clean, green and safe environment.

The concept of the structure is a vertical or hanging garden, only in this case the height is secondary. They took as a basis an old residential area consisting of several multi-storey towers and bridges between them, after which the unused interior space of 0.9 hectares was built up with a multi-stage construction. It has three large tiers, divided into separate floors. At the bottom of the spacious halls for sports and dancing, in the middle is a medical center, at the top – a public park under the open sky.

The building has an underground parking, shopping center, kindergarten, restaurants. Not only old people live here – rather, they constitute the main contingent, but in general Kampung Admiralty is a typical residential complex, where maximum infrastructure facilities are located in a limited space. The difference with other projects is that it is not commercial benefit that is at the forefront but comfort. For example, in a building there are symbolic electricity bills, because there is enough natural light everywhere, there is passive ventilation and shaded areas.

 Building of the Year

Singapore is quite rainy, so Kampung Admiralty is equipped with a water collection system that feeds all green areas. And there are so many of them here that almost every floor has its own biosphere. The judges of the competition really liked the fact that the old people do not go for a walk in a separate park, and so they constantly move along it in the course of their daily activities. Not to separate objects, buildings, institutions, but to be able to put together all that without which modern life is unthinkable, but without prejudice to the operating conditions — for this project the title “Building of the Year” was awarded.
