The future of medicine will be inextricably linked with nanotechnology. One of the facts supporting this thesis is the successful use of quantum dots for the treatment of serious diseases.

Quantum dots are nanoparticles obtained from any semiconductor material that, under the influence of light, begin to glow with a certain color. Their size is from 2 to 5 nanometers. For comparison, the antibodies produced by our immune system for fighting viruses are twice as large, and human hair is just a giant that exceeds the quantum dots by 10,000 times. Recently, scientists working in the field of nanomedicine have become interested in their unique properties.

A team of researchers at Swansea University (Wales) has found a way to obtain quantum dots from the extract of leaves of Chinese camellia (Camelia sinensis), or, more simply, tea. The use of tea leaves extract makes the production process cost-effective and completely safe. During the experiments, it was found that quantum dots are able to penetrate into the tiny pores of the outer membrane of skin cancer cells and stop their growth. From the whole array of cancer cells in the Petri dish, the points managed to block the development of 80% of their number.

The first results of the research mean that two important problems have already been solved: the new technology does not require large expenditures, and is also completely safe.
