A group of researchers from MIT revealed the riddle of the anomaly of the “craton roots”, because of which the speed and the graph of the passage of acoustic signals through certain parts of the rock were highly distorted. We are talking about seismic waves that shake the depths of the planet and have been studied for several decades. The reason probably lies in the innumerable deposits of wealth in the bowels of our Earth.

Craton is an ancient stable area of ​​the earth's surface, the core of the continent, which has not been subjected to destructive tectonic activity long ago, for a billion years or more. The craton has a kind of “roots” – rock protrusions the size of a mountain, directed downward, toward the center of the Earth. The substances from which they are composed are very strong and solid, which is confirmed by a change in the velocity of vibrational waves passing through them.

However, in some cases, the speed of passage of the wave through the concrete roots of the craton is several times greater than the calculated one. The scientists modeled the conditions and found out that to achieve such an effect inside the rock there must be a lot of impregnation of the substance with the strength of the diamond. From 1% to 2% – taking into account the dimensions of the cratons themselves, this is the largest deposit of precious stones in history. The bill is not on billions of tons, but on quadrillion!

Alas, the depth of occurrence of the roots of the craton starts from 150 km and deeper, therefore, with existing technologies, it is impossible to reach them. Yes, and not cost-effective – with this amount of diamonds immediately cease to be a rarity and will lose in price. But this gives food for thought and material for experiments, because then it is necessary to revise many geological postulates.
