Wearable electronics should be as compact and comfortable as items for everyday life, and not a parody of bulky steampunk crafts. When developing a new concept of smart glasses, researchers from the French organization CEA have established a strict limitation for themselves: the gadget should fit into the dimensions of ordinary sunglasses. So, no displays and cameras, the image will have to be transferred directly to the user's eye.
The technology developed by French scientists combines holographic optics and semiconductor grids. In such smart glasses glass acts as a projector that sends photons into the eye in small beams. One bundle is one pixel, the grating inside the glass is used to simulate a screen with a resolution of 300×300 pixels, the picture from which is transferred pixel-by-pixel to the eye. A person sees a set of points that the brain interprets into clear symbols, letters and numbers.
The prototype of the glasses can transmit only a static image, there is no talk about working with video yet. There is no possibility to create a color picture, it is still too difficult. And even the stated resolution is no more than an experimental assumption, because in holographic optics it is not necessary to follow the rules for flat displays. For example, you can easily shift the image to the right or left without using intermediate data if the user has such a visual impairment.
In general, this technology can open a new direction in the correction of vision problems, when, instead of medical treatment, the smart glasses are personalized and the person is able to see normally. This will not heal him and even make him even more dependent on the accessory, but this approach is cheaper and safer than eye surgery in the future.
