Graphene is a fantastic material consisting of one layer of interconnected carbon atoms. It is by right one of the most unique artificial materials in the history of mankind. Recently, scientists at the University of Exeter (UK) found it another use – as an additive to create a new type of concrete.

To do this, a team of researchers developed a technique for suspending graphene flakes in water, after which the mixture is added to traditional concrete ingredients – cement and filler . It is reported that this process is not costly and is quite compatible with the existing technologies of concrete production.

 Concrete

In the course of the experiments, it was found that the compressive strength of graphene concrete, compared to the conventional one, increased by 146%, and the bending strength by 79.5%, while the water resistance decreased by 400%. The new material fully complies with the British and European building standards.

The obtained indices will allow to considerably increase the service life of objects constructed of graphene concrete and reduce its consumption during construction by approximately 50%. This will improve the environmental component of the process, as cement production is one of the main sources of CO2 emissions. According to scientists, they will be reduced by 446 kg / t.
