To date, large amounts of information are still stored on all sorts of disks, but right now there is really a giant unused storage that has yet to be mastered. It's about holographic storage devices.

A team of Chinese scientists developed a nanoparticle-based film that can store information in the form of 3D holograms that improve data density, read speed, write and stability in difficult environments.

The idea of ​​holographic data storage has existed not for the first decade, but there has been no tangible progress in this direction. In 2005, several large technology companies joined forces to promote the idea of ​​universal holographic disks (HVD), as well as holographic maps.

The most significant successes were achieved by the scientists of the Northwestern University of China, who created a new type of carrier. At the first stage, they developed a semiconductor film of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver nanoparticles. The information is recorded on it by means of a laser by changing the charge, and since different wavelengths of the laser affect the particles in different ways, the information is “stored” in the form of three-dimensional holograms.

This technology allows devices to store more information in a smaller physical space than conventional optical systems. According to the university team, a fragment of a holographic film measuring 10 x 10 cm and a thickness of 620 nanometers will allow storing 1000 times more data than a DVD, that is, about 8.5 TB.
