The company MARS Bioimaging has completed a ten-year project to create a medical scanner with stunning parameters for displaying the internal parts of the body. The MARS system is based on the technology from CERN, which uses X-rays on new principles. The result is the world's first three-dimensional and color images of human bones, organs and tissues.

The heart of the scanner is the “Spectral CT” sensor, which measures specific wavelengths of X-rays when passing through various materials. Obtained spectroscopic data, special algorithms are converted into a 3D model, which can be viewed on the monitor. For this purpose, Medipix chips are used, the next generation of those devices used at the Large Hadron Collider to track subatomic particles. Each chip is responsible for processing a single particle – according to scientists at CERN, this is not capable of any other tool in the world.

Out-of-the-box accuracy in measurements makes it possible to distinguish, highlight and color the finest details for clarity in different colors. Show not just flesh and bones, but fat, layers of skin, nerve fibers and the movement of particles in the blood vessels. In the experiment with the scan of the wrist with a wristwatch, it was possible to partially see their internal arrangement, while the material of the case shields the radiation.

The scanner compares easily pathologies, helps doctors to see the defects of joints, bone diseases, to find cancer tumors. For the next few months, the MARS system will be fully tested on real patients in the orthopedic and rheumatology departments of several hospitals in New Zealand to test the scanner in the field. And if everything goes well, the technology will be commercialized.
