Scientists of the University of St. Andrews (Great Britain) have developed an ultrathin membrane laser based on organic semiconductors, which after installation on the eye will greatly increase the possibilities of human vision. The membrane, despite its fine structure and unique flexibility, possesses enviable strength, preserving optical properties even after several months of use on a contact lens.

An ocular laser that has already been tested in the eyes of a cow easily identifies clear lines on a flat background – for example, drawing of a digital bar code. Technology can find application in the field of security, in biophotonics (a science section that studies the interaction of biological objects with photons) and photomedicine.

As the member of the group of scientists Professor Malth Geyser stated, the work represents a new milestone in the development of the laser and, in particular, answers the question of how the laser propagates in soft and plastic media. The invention can be used in wearable sensors or as an authentication function on banknotes.
