The number of cyber attacks on users of devices running Android OS, carried out through messaging services, in 2017 increased by more than 14% compared to the previous year. This is reported by “Izvestia” with reference to the researchers InfoWatch and Dr.Sc. Web.
The wide spread of instant messengers has become a fertile ground for scammers, states Herman Klimenko, adviser to the Russian president on Internet development. “If you could only lose personal photos five years ago, today it's commercial correspondence, bank accounts, contacts,” he said.
As a rule, the theft of personal data is carried out by programs pretending to be either for messengers or for their alternative versions with enhanced functionality. Insufficiently savvy users install such software, after which there are two scenarios for the development of events.
The first victim is offered to download additional components, for example, as in the case of a fake WhatsApp client that contain malicious code. In the second – scammers steal login and password from the account, and then threaten to reveal the secret of correspondence to the whole contact list, if they do not get a ransom. Both of these, as you understand, do not promise anything good to the victim.
