Video review: Two weeks with Samsung Galaxy S9

<pre>Video review: Two weeks with Samsung Galaxy S9

Many things were said about the Samsung Galaxy S9 before its release. When he came out, there were many reviews, but today I want to not just list his characteristics once again, but share my experience of using it.

I always had a double attitude to Samsung smartphones, which was expressed in the fact that I could not to get along with them. On the one hand, they always liked me technically, and many others also externally, but at the same time there was always something wrong in them. As a rule, it was reduced to a shell or control elements.

There is no need to go far beyond the example. Outwardly I really like the rounded edges. Particularly, what kind they have acquired recently, but still something confuses me in them. Thanks to the company though for the fact that it removed the name from the front panel. In my opinion, the place is at best on the back wall.

Otherwise I liked the fact that the company is constantly experimenting with the design. For example, they transferred the scanner of prints to different places three times in the last year. The question is why it was immediately not to place it where it should, but this can already be called an attempt to come up with something comfortable and beautiful. In any case, now the company's smartphones have come to the same style, and I do not think this is bad, but it concerns not only the scanner, but the whole case.

I used the Samsung S9 for just over two weeks and tried everything in it it was interesting to me. Although the first thing that was interesting after the presentation was the camera, new unlocking methods and animated emoji.

Yes, the animated emotoos were interesting to me. I was curious how the company was able to realize this function after a long talk about it last fall. The main difference from animoji in Apple's performance will be that Apple is responsible for this system created to unlock the face, and she does not just look at the user, namely, scans the face, making up his 3D model. This is enough to keep things from twitching and working smoothly and smoothly.

As a result, Samsung S9 produces an image with jerks, and it does not always correspond to reality. Because of this, the function bothers even faster. The Apple version also does not take a solid place in life, but at the expense of the implementation level it looks much nicer and therefore has much more to itself.

Creating a model is generally a separate story. You go a few steps, and on the output you get someone who does not really look like you. Maybe I'm wrong, because I see myself differently, but all the same it seems to me that there are very few similarities. In the same way, anyone could be photographed, and the same image would be obtained.

In general, all the application “Camera” is made in Asian style and traditionally for Samsung. It has many masks that not all are needed, although a couple of times with friends, we laughed heartily at what was happening on the screen, but no more.

From the point of view of ergonomics, the smartphone, of course, has become more convenient, but the scanner still located too close to the camera, and sometimes the finger does not hit it. In many respects this is due to the high edge of the scanner, resting in which one wants to move the finger further, and it hits the camera window. But it's a matter of habit, and it's generally easier to use unlocking on the face.

Another disadvantage in ergonomics I would call the assistant button, which the company actively promotes. The Bixby call button is still next to the volume buttons, and it is often possible to press it instead of decreasing the volume. It's also a matter of habit, but first mistakes are encountered. But the fact that the Power button was at least a couple of millimeters, but higher, I estimated as a plus, for me it is more convenient.

Combined face recognition system is only one of the huge number of owner identification systems that are in the Samsung Galaxy S9 . Traditional codes, graphic passwords and imprint have not gone away, but apart from them there is an unlock on the face and on the iris of the eyes, but if they were in the usual version even before, now they are combined into a single system.

[19659007] Recognition occurs quickly, and it is visible on the animation, but after that the smartphone for some reason is not immediately unlocked. It is difficult to say what is connected with this, but after the update, which arrived not so long ago, the situation became better, although it is subjective.

The combined user identification system should work reliably, but it is too difficult to check, so we just believe the manufacturer for a word. Nevertheless, in conditions of complex lighting, it works better than face recognition in the previous model. In total darkness, until the iPhone X is far, but the result is not so bad, as many say.

The performance of a smartphone is not even worth talking about. In Russia, the Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with an Exynos 9810 processor. Someone will be upset that this is not Snapdragon 845, but Exynos is no less productive processor, so there will be no problems. In fact, mobile processors have recently been so far ahead of the needs that it's not even necessary to talk about performance in the flagships. It just is, and it's enough.

I do not play games on the smartphone very often, because I think that there is a PlayStation for this, but sometimes it does. On this I also tried to run a few demanding games and play them for a while. There is heating of the case, but there is almost no drop in the frame rate.

It's a pity that there are only four gigabytes of RAM. In the version of “Plus” there are already six, but I used the usual version. More than once I said that I prefer small smartphones. Although this is difficult to call small, it is rather sufficient.

In Samsung Galaxy S9 I liked the screen more than last year's model, as it changes colors less. It remains only to do something with the side faces, so that they are not so prominent. The rest of the complaints were not caused by the display. Brightness as a whole is enough for him, and there's nothing to say about detailing, it's at a high level, thanks to a maximum resolution of 2960 by 1440 pixels.

With regard to Samsung displays, I always liked the fact that its resolution can be changed. I put the maximum only when I wanted to realize what it is. But in the end he returned to the recommended 2220 by 1080 and felt great with him. I did not notice any special energy saving, but still I do not see the point in twisting it to the maximum, if there is still enough clarity of the image.

If we focus on autonomy in more detail, we can not say that she impressed me. In my mode, the smartphone often did not live up to the end of the day, although many others did it quietly. Even the optimization modes did not help me much. At least that's the case in my case, when I'm not playing demanding games, but the display is turned on frequently, and sometimes some applications are running in the background.

The main distinguishing feature of the camera is the variable aperture value , which can range from f / 1.5 to f / 2.4. It is not always easy to find a practical need for this, and therefore it is difficult to say how much the camera would have suffered if there had been no such function. In general, the blur achieved by the operation of the aperture is not bad, but the effect achieved is noticeable only if taken from a short distance. If you can say so, in the macro mode.

On the one hand, the Samsung Galaxy S9 camera is good, and it is better than the S8 and Note8, but, firstly, not very much, secondly, after the release of the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, the usual cameras faded slightly against their background.

The camera's aperture is good, but still it's not head on top of other smartphones, and sometimes it even loses a little over the dynamic range Google Pixel 2.

On the question of whether it is necessary to smartphone camera with shooting mode 960 fps, difficult to answer unequivocally. Do you often use the slow motion that is in your smartphone? 120 fps, 240 fps … This is good, but it is used on strength a couple of times a year. Someone, of course, more often, but I'm talking about the traditional use case.

Remove in this mode, you can literally a few seconds of video. And then it's about the finished video. At the entrance, this will be about 0.1-0.2 seconds, which will turn into about 6-7 seconds of super-slow video. Technically, it's still great, and I admired it even when Sony did one of the first steps in this direction, but in practice the technology is poorly applicable.

If you shoot something that lasts a long time , then it will slow down, and if you want to shoot a short event, you'll have to try. The camera can start recording itself when it realizes that the movement has started, but in fact it still does not work very well, and sometimes there are errors.

The ultra-slow video has HD resolution, unlike Sony XZ2, where such video shoots in FullHD. But in order not to be misleading, I will remind you that there is support for a higher resolution due to the reduction of the shooting time. So now HD for this kind of shooting is normal. So shoots and Sony (if you choose the appropriate mode), and Huawei, and Samsung itself. It is unlikely that anything will change in the near future unless it is a technical trick.

Shooting a video looks good, and the optical stabilizer helps. Digital does not always help well, and sometimes even spoils the picture. Before the update, he tore the picture to pieces. After the update, the situation is better, and such troubles are less common, and mostly when shooting at 4K 60 fps.

The SELFI-camera is not impressive against the background of competitors. She simply is, and she is at the level of the flagship. There is nothing more to say about her. With sharpness, everything is fine, blurring, if it is, pleasant, and color rendition and contrast at the level of ordinary images.

Summarizing my experience of exploitation, I can say that the smartphone, although it turned out worthy, but not so much so that you can change your S8 to it. The new model is somewhat reminiscent of the iPhone with the S add-on, when something has changed, something has changed, but in fact the old model still works fine, and this generation can be missed.

So if you were thinking last year to update whether the S7, not to mention the S6, now, perhaps, worth it. You can wait another year, but you can wait for it next year. If you just want to start using the S-series, then this is a good option, although again there is a feeling that a year ahead will be more significant. But, on the other hand, it always will be possible to wait another year for the purchase, because then there will be something better, which is not quite right.
